Swiss National Day Review 2017

Happy Swiss National Day – the 1st of August is a big celebration in Switzerland. Saturday on July 29 the 27th Canton of Switzerland was in euphoria as about 147 Swiss fellows, partners and kids made it to the remote location of Gidgegannup. Hiking gear to feel comphy in the harsh wind and strong random showers was part of the free entertainment. The Alphorn blowers where giving us some welcome tunes and Petrus commented with his best quick shower at the end of the last song. All present escaped into the barn and Reto and his team were throwing the meat (as always best quality only) and sausages on the BBQ attached to the barn.

Cherry originally from the Wallis was welcoming the guests at the administration. It was wonderful to feel the support of the 'section Romande'. Let’s see where we see her next.
Business owners gathered inside at 3.10pm to give Lorenz their business cards which were then nailed on to a post (see photograph).

During the feast the Swiss Club President Lorenz was giving a speech. He promoted Swiss businesses to the fellows as follows: 'You me and everyone present has experienced how the Perth economy changed and the Swiss Club of WA is adapting to this circumstances by giving professionals and businesses a platform to present themselves on the events', saying this words and pointing on the post. Each business card was pointed out by Lorenz and the business introduced to the people present.

The new club members Adrian Lehmann, his wife and their 4 boys received their mugs and were welcomed by the Swiss fellow present after a short introduction to their family background given by Adrian.

During the speech, the attendees were also asked to show their Swiss Army knives. Shockingly, the president had to discover that only about 40 knives were presented to him. (Immediate action will be taken to address this current issue in not enough Swissness in pockets.)

The Schuemlipfluemli bar was well hosted by Nicole and Steve. As usual let the lights went out due to the generators not being able to provide enough electrical power. Small issues like this are no problem for the Swiss present and the cosy darkness only lasted a short time. Hot water for the Schuemlipluemli coffee was always ready and a few connoisseurs even brought the correct glass for this special drink. The Schuemlipfluemli bar was indeed a hit as demonstrated by a photo of Willy Kurt and his son smiling while ready to taste the first sip.

Rene (thank god his foot is better!) has prepared the diesel soaked cloth to lit the famous Bonfire at last. 5 teenage boys were given the honour to lit it. The bonfire was spectacular with embers flying into the sky. The rain earlier during the day was welcome for once annihilating any fire hazard. Big thanks and a well done to Simon Waldmeier and his team who prepared the fire this year. At 8 am the next morning the bonfire was still appreciated by kids sitting around the remaining ambers to get warm after a cool night camping.

The event was a true team effort: A well organised team of helpers were responsible for set up the event, a second wave of helpers cleaned up and removed all bits and pieces necessary. At 12pm on Sunday, the Gidgegennup property was deserted again with only one or two campers remaining to enjoy the beauty of nature.

The Swiss National celebration will be on Saturday Afternoon and Evening
